Chief Thomas

Does anyone find it interesting that Staff Battalion Chief Tracy Thomas was hired for the position of Battalion Chief of ESU but now currently holds the position of Executive Officer?  At the time the position opened it was stated that there was no officer qualified in the department to run ESU.  Staff Battalion Chief Thomas was hired because of her experience and expertise in emergency services.  She has now been appointed to the position of Executive Officer to the Fire Chief.....  How is this even possible?

The city website defines this as

What does unclassified and classified employment mean?
Unclassified employees serve at the will of the appointing authority. Classified employees have grievance rights following the completion of their probationary period.

What is going on with this department?  Someone please explain to me how an individual can be hired for a specifically defined position with specifically defined benefits(classified) and within a very short amount of time get a full retirement option(unclassified) and become second(first) in command.

  2. Lower end looks like 86,000...upper BCs make 102,000. Go here to find out http://datacenter.timesdispatch.com/databases/salaries-local-officials/

  3. If we are talking salary of an SBC, how about we compare to some other battalion chiefs that came up through the ranks.

    John Harkness - $91,844 - Hired in 1980.
Hey wait a minute, this guy has been here over 30 years and makes less than someone hired in 2008? Does that make much sense? Maybe it has to do with the fine job she did working for RAA (why did she leave?) or AMR (again why did she leave?)?

  4. Let's start holding the administration resposible for some of the incompetent decisions that have been made on their watch. For example: How about the fact that the fire dept did not have have a license to run EMS calls for a period of time, because someone didn't do the required paperwork. How many EMT certifications have lapsed on TT's watch? Wasn't that part of the job description?? What about the FACT that Q-6 is the only ALS fire company in the city, but is not allowed to respond to any vehicle entrapment calls in the South Side, but do run on ALL such calls in the North Side. If there is a fire in the South Side and all local companies are tied up, then Q-6 will be dispatched to a fire alarm or EMS call in that area. Are citizens in the South Side not as important as the those living in the North Side? Who is in charge of deciding which people receive the best possible care and who gets the short end of the stick??? In an enviroment of equal treatment for all, who exactly is deciding which lives are valuble enough to receive ALS care when warranted, and which are reduced to receiving whatever care they are offered?? This goes against the basic principles of the fire department as a service agency, and more particularly our oath to leave the ENTIRE city more perfect than we found it. I applaud this website; let's use it to positively affect the citizens of the city-because after all, it's their VILLAGE; we just try to protect it and all living in it. I strongly believe that City Counsel and the public should be made aware of these issues.

  6. I am aware as most of her EMS creditial's but what about here state level fire certs which all of the rank and file must have to opperate? Should that not be a concern of the city but also her?

  7. No offense, but the actual demand for an ALS fire company is very low, if not obsolete. I agree on the other issues.

  8. None taken but as the moderator said, please only put factual information on this site. If the demand is low please explain why a pt died, trapped inside of his vehicle, without a patent airway. An ALS company which remained in quarters could have placed an advanced airway that may have changed the pt's outcome. Of the 3 other specialties, what is the demand for them? Answer: It is low but in no way any less important than any other aspect of our job. Although I am no longer assigned there I respect the job that quint 6 personnel do. Please go to FDM and look at ALS responses and you will see the demand. If you are unaware of the capabilities of Q6 (which it sounds like you are) then please give them a call and I am sure they would love to help you. Don't turn this into the watchdesk. If you want to add to a conversation go out do your homework and write something educated. I do not know who you are but you are better than "I agree" and an insult to some very hardworking people. Do not use this to attack individuals or in any way hurt the department as a whole. Be safe

    1. Who appointed you 'Chief and overseer' here dude. I don't see where anyone here asked you for feedback. If your BS is what we can find here on '411...' this site is doomed.

  9. Wake up people. This is called social engineering. Look around you, at the people next to you. People hired to build a structure of 'equaliy' regardless of 'ability'. You and the citizens of Richmond are being sacrificed by people 'smarter' than you. It started with Affirmative Action.
Here's a question for the younger floks in the Dept. Why do the stupid "old Timers' laugh at the Building Bridges program.
