Time and time again

Once again the voice of the "end user" has gone unheard.  I know certain people get on here and defend the decisions and ideas from 201 so here is another one for you.  Since 1998 one of the main complaints has been the size of the current Quint as it relates to the streets of the City of Richmond.  Certain people of authority who reside in a corner office, shared in this concern/complaint and for some reason seem to have forgotten that.  We have identified streets we cannot turn on to or exit from, as well as areas that have limited access due to overall vehicle size (in case you ask if we have let 201 know).  The decision was made to jump on to Suffolk Virginia's contract with Pierce, thus minimizing the time needed to get new trucks on the road. As usual this was because as with everything, it was left until the last minute. It is a direct result of a lack of planning.  For those of you who do not understand what this means, when you jump onto a contract you do not have to have a bidding process.
However you may only change a certain percentage of the original localities specifications.   This would be ok if RVA was in any way similar to Suffolk, however as we all know there are few similarities.  Over the past weeks several vehicles have arrived from the initial purchase.  As we were already aware, the trucks share a similar look and size to the current fleet.
Now again I know EVERYONE has concerns regarding the size and will have to wait another 10 years till we can look for some progress and change but it gets better.  Keep in mind a lot of money is currently being spent to aid in lowering our above national average accident rate (Which you are to blame for).  Problem is how many of those accidents were below 25 mph?  Could these accidents be a result of the size of the truck?
Well since we "know nothing" and "don't understand how things work", and all we do is "complain", can someone please explain the theory in purchasing the same size truck but with a larger turning radius?  Companies have begun training on their apparatus and have reported that the turning radius of the 105' quints is far worse than the truck it will replace.
When will this end?  When will the firefighters in the field finally get an advocate instead of an enemy?  Correct me if I'm wrong but are we not the ones operating the trucks?  Is it not obvious that there is a very large lack of knowledge on how to manage and run anything?  There is an old saying,  "Repeating the same mistake over and over again is the definition of insanity"

  1. I've heard the same thing from some of the guys that have driven a 75'. These things actually turn worse than the 1998 fleet. Yes, it's a slightly smaller truck, but you can't make some turns that you can with the OLD Quint.

  2. This is just another case of our corner dwelling chief and his ex RASI side kick being reactive rather than proactive. Other examples are the new dive team equipment, and TODAYS officer class at training on a near miss 6, yes SIX YEARS AGO. Right on time chief. What happens if Fitch says the administration (read Chief) is the problem? What happened to the TRI Data report? Why is building Bridges only used by the chief after being called out on the carpet by a council member in front of his men?
Why is administration not listening? It is time to start filling up the suggestion boxes with suggestions and demanding someone carry the suggestions to administration. If the chief won't listen someone will. Reva has listened, 8 more council members will, the mayor will, so why won't the chief?

    1. Hahahahaha suggestion box!!!!! How long did that last? Come on its just another thing he does to say he did it and pull it out when backed into a corner. Sort of like open Mic nights, town halls and commitees. Funny part is we buy in. We filled the boxes, attended meetings and sat on commitees in hopes that our participation and drive would help make a change. Shame on us

  5. Leave? His ego will never let him. Just like it will never let him admit that he was wrong about...well, anything. Up to and including these new trucks. Enjoy the higher accident rate. Just make sure to get to where you're going before you get red numbers.

  6. All that is needed for evil leadership to last for ever is for good firefigthers to do nothing but talk about it. It would be interesting to have a published survey among all the area paid firefighters on how their fire chief messures up to the other fire chiefs in the area. Survey the chiefs education, training, office staff per operations personnel, age of equipment, executive officer background (LOL)sorry. The media and the public have a right to know what they are paying for (look at salary)per square mile of coverage. Are the fire chiefs allowed to use the issued public vechile on out of town personal shopping and vacation home trips, how many dress uniforms have they purchased, do they buy uniforms for non-sworn civilian staff. Think of the questions that haven't been asked.
In leadership hope is not a method, it is only a way to create widows, widowers, and orphans.

  7. There were tractor drawn aerials in the city for a reason. Only reason they left was because of the quintet concept. Keep it a quint if you want but they design and manufacture tillers for a reason.....

  8. There is an answer for everything. When asked at a town hall meeting why we were not looking into TDA's the Fire Chief stated he could not defend insuring 2 drivers instead of one and it would make it difficult to figure out who is responsible in the event of an accident.
Correct me if I am wrong but is the City not self insured? The answer made no sense it just shut us up at the time.

    1. Years back a decision was made, if the driver was at fault he was charged. If the tillerman was at fault he was charged. Very seldon were both the driver and tillerman at fault. Bobby's reasoning doing hold water. He surely remembers this ruling.
