Overtime

How does one captain get three 24 hour overtime days in one week? Maybe just a lot of people turn down the call...that must be it. Thoughts?

  1. Very easy. He did it the same way a FF from 18 got 3 days in that same week. If your off on an A B C day then its a very short list. Officers are suppose to manually put there shift's V & H days on the overtime list. When the officer doesnt do that. This is why certain people don't show up on the OT list. I hope that this answered your question. FFs need to check with their officers and make sure that he or she are doing there jobs.

    1. FFs need to check with their officers and make sure that he or she are doing there jobs. That's sad that the FFs need to make sure the officer's are doing their job. I thought that's what Battalion chiefs were for. Do the officer's get the same e-mails as the FFs from training? I still hear alot of unnecessary talk on the radio. Such as "At this time", or "Q-16 has been cancelled by RASI unit # 79 no patient contact". I am sure we received an e-mail to stop this. Why are the chiefs not correcting their officer's? How about the report audits since the officer's took over? Have you received any to be corrected or did we all just magically become very profficient at reports? Chief's why aren't you making sure your officer's are doing their jobs? So, whichever chief or Captain made this first comment, please do your job to look out for the FFs that you are in charge of. Don't just look out for yourself!

First i've heard of this. I thought officers were in charge of correcting their AIC's PCRs, and HQ would do some random checking from time to time. Never heard that officers were auditing anyone outside of thier company...

Couldnt agree with you more... I got the email, you got the email, didnt everyone get the email about cutting out the "cancelled by RASI 84, in service." I hate the useless radio garbage that fills up the air. Doesnt your MDC have an in service button. And for those of you who say "my MDC's locked up." 10 times a day... ok i know it happens for real sometimes but not on every call. Give it a second. Is your PC at home instant or does it take a second to load... Im done

  4. If I recall, I think some personal opinions were tossed into the training that outlined cutting down on radio traffic. Good ideas, none the less, but not mandatory.

  5. Yet another example of the Fire Chiefs innability to perform his duties as chief of the department. If he had promoted based on ability and experience we would not have these issues. Unfortunately the chief and the city have decided that it is more important to hand out titles and money based on race and sex instead. This will never change. Stupid people will always prevail. In this City the "good guy" does finish last. The RFD has always been a "Good Ole Boy" it is just the inner circles that change. For the time being we will be hiring individuals who recieve their mail through the drivers side window of their car and have to contact their PO weekly to check in. Come to work get your check and go home to your family the dream is over....

  6. Maybe in Richmond the dream is over but maybe the grass is greener on the other side. Henrico is opening up for applications soon. Good luck to everyone.

  7. How OT is handled has always been a problem. The system has never worked because it is flawed. It sucks being the FF not getting the day because someone calls the chief begging or because the acting chiefs call their buddies. What also sucks is having to sit on the phone for 2 hours calling 65 people to fill 1 position. There are 2 sides to this problem however there is one common theme......no decision from 201. There is an obvious problem that has been brought to their attention for years and still no solution. Not even an attempt. What exactly do you do up there Chief? Oh wait Fitch will give you the answer to this problem too, right? It must be nice to make over $150,000 a year to do nothing. City council called you a subject expert but we all know that couldn't be further from the truth.

Wow, I can't believe what I am reading. Chief Creecy is the best Chief you will ever have. Something is wrong here.

  9. Problem: O.T. appears to not reach the firefighters and officers who would like it and seems as if only a "select" few are consistently receiving opportunities. This in turn in causing a general mistrust of the process and is thereby lending to the apparent lack of morale throughout the department.

Possible solution: In order to alleviate the Battalion Chief tasked with finding overtime personnel from wasting time calling firefighters who may or may not be willing to work that day, an Overtime List needs to be initiated. This list could be prompted by a weekly or monthly sign up email or calendar. Once you have placed your name for a particular day, the assigned chief can call off from that list of willing candidates on a first come first serve basis. The only time a chief would have to use the old system of contacting firefighters is if no one has signed up for that day. Of course if someone signs up for a day and does not commit to come in then their name could be removed from the list for that sign up period.

This is just a suggestion and I think with tweaking it could work. If you all have something to lend or better soultions, post them. Our admins may not admit it but they do read these posts. Lets be more solution oriented instead of hurling insults at people who may not deserve it (or who may).

  10. What we need is some type of staffing officer. It's kinda ridiculous that BC has to make all those calls for overtime and handle daily staffing. No, I'm not a BC trying to delegate work, but I do think that the BC has become so much of an administrative position, that they are just generally disconnected from their companies. Let the the BCs concentrate the performance of their companies on the fire ground, and get them the hell out of the office. I would say that generally, BCs only get to see their companies perform on the few building fires that we actually have. When they screw up, they may need to be held accountable and not have their hand held at some bogus PIA. I guess the only problem with this is that if you have BCs that never new how to fully function as a company officer, then it's pretty useless to have them observe or rate anyone.
