Urgent! Close Call in Richmond

This story is still in very early stages but we wanted to get it posted so we can see what we can gather. We seemed to have a close call regarding the dive team which was operating near Dock St. for a car that had gone into the river. It appears that while operating at the scene the underwater communication system either malfunctioned or wasn't working properly. During the search operation one diver to become entangled and had no way to alert the other members that he was in trouble. After several minutes a second diver was sent in and found the entangled diver and assisted him on getting out of the water.

  1. Please-Please Make sure we get all the information before we start posting about this, i understand this is a very time sensitive, emotional issue and would not like to see some very good people thrown under the bus before all the facts and information is out. so please keep the safety on the guns before blasting away.

  2. First, the diver involved is doing good and has returned to work. Per the Fire Chief the incident is going to be investigated by an outside agency. New equipment for the dive team is scheduled to be purchased. If it is found to be equipment failure that caused this incident, hopefully the problem will be taken care of even prior to the report being finalized. As of this point the RFD dive team will not be operating below the surface. As mentioned by CoolBreeze the purpose of this site is to provide factual information to assist in making the RFD better as well as help minimize rumors. Stay low!

  3. Dive operations are currently suspended. Until equipment and training issues are ironed out, this will remain in effect. No one is diving again until it can be done in a proper and safe manner. An emergency purchase is already underway. I won't comment on the actual event.

  4. Why is it that we have to come to this site to get information like this? Not one piece of information has come from anyone at 201.
If the incident is being investigated, why has the Chief not put out any offical statement? What is he hiding or better yet trying to cover up?
Who is the outside agency investigating this? Is it an unbiased agency or someone the Chief hired to cover his butt?
Why has it taken for an event to happen to make an emergency purchase of equipment?
I agree the rumors need to be minimized, but why does it take a site like this and not from the top?
It is time for Creecy to man up and do his job and stop hiding behind this masquerade of openess until he doesn't like what he's hearing.

    1. Keeping you informed of every little detail is not the Chiefs job. Did you get some paperwork when you were hired that said you would get every detail of every incident? I imagine the incident will be investigated and if some changes can be made to improve safety it will happen. You may not have heard, but being a fire fighter is a dangerous job. Some of you guys would not last a day working for a corporation. The whole entitlement attitude gets old.

    2. I wouldn't define a close call as a "little detail"

    3. Wow it looks like we have a kool aid drinker here.some of you guys would not last a day working for a corporation? Please base some facts on your statement and your name. All I see are people want to know the facts on the close call . Lets investigate it, identify the problem, fix the problem. And put measures in place so it does not ever happen again. The most important thing is that we all go home safe to our loved ones at the end of the tour. Lets all play nice in the sand box. If I say it here I will say it to your face. My name is zack and I approve of this post.

    4. Correct - when you complain this much and work for a corporation, you get fired, or managed out. Very simple. The best way to effect change is education and hard work. Over time you opinion becomes valued and you are able to improve the department. Work through your chain of command when there is a concern. And if you really hate the place and/or job, get a new one. Otherwise, quit complaining so much. Seriously, I know you all do all kinds of good stuff, please post some of that out here also.

    5. How do you know we do good stuff? You say all we do is complain. We are stating facts and bringing to light safety concerns that almost resulted in a firefighters death. But you want us fired? Really? Would you feel this way if it was you in the dark muddy cold water? Whould you feel the same way if it was your son or daughter? Sir you are looking at this from the outside looking in, we are looking at it from a different view. Its ok, I understand its hard to see it from our point of view. I am not here to bash you or anyone else. I just want all of my brother and sister firefighters to go home to there loved one at the end of there duty cycle. If you feel I am wrong here, please tell me. It will not affect the way I come to find you in your burning home, nor the way I help cut the mangled car from around you, nor the way I help you if you are having a medical problem. I am not a corporate working, I am a firefighter.my name miss zack an I approve this post.

  5. This goes back to the beginning of the Rescue Co.s. Too much turnover in the company(s) due to selfish motivational factors; ie: promotional opportunity for one.... There is not enough experience at any one given time to keep the co. safe. The Dept. is more worried about manpower issues and filling seats instead of making sure the companies are properly staffed with QUALIFIED individuals to do the job safely and effectively.
